Review:
This is phone a feature packed handset that can match the features of other handsets that are 2 to 3 times as costly. However it's main downfall is it's size, weighing in at a bulky 155g, it's nowhere near the standard GSM sized handsets, but it is a 3G handset so you have to expect a little more mass.
It has a good quality screen of 64,000 colours and 176 x 220 pixels, up there with the largest.
It has 2 VGA 0.3 megapixel camera's, one facing outwards, and one facing the user. You can switch between the two easily and quickly, great for self portraits, and necessary for the videocall function. The photo quality is exellent during well lit areas, but falls down a bit when in lower lighting, even inside at night, with the light on it produces fairly dark images which also contain a lot of visual noise in the form of blue pixels.
The camera's also act as video recorders. Producing the standard 176x144 QCIF mp4 video's with sound, which are recordable in lenths of up to 10 sec or 3 mins, which i find to be adequate. The audio lags a little bit, so it looks a bit like a badly dubbed chinese karate film, where you lips don't match up with the audio of you talking. But the delay is only very slight, so only just enough to look weird.
The camera is easy to use and has various light settings and image sizes.
The Keypad is a little bit stiff, so you have to firmly press the digits you want, but they soften up a little over time. The joystick is very good, for browsing through menu's and most of all, for playing games, when a button style directional pad just isn't good enough.
The Infrared port is well place at the top of the handset which is good.
The Operating System is very user friendly, and you will find yourself taking to it with ease. The mutimedia folder is a bit annoying though, because you can't create folders for your files, there just all in together, even with the original pre installed wallpaper and tones etc. You do have seperate folders for images and audio and video of course, but within those folders you cannot have seperate folders to organise you images into catogories. So if you want to keep them seperate you will have to put digits at the start of the file name so you can order it.
It has a decent organiser, with an easy to use calendar and task list combined. But there is no notepad dissapointingly and you can only set an alarm attached to an appointment. And even though the phone has a voice recorder function, it can not be used to create voice memo's, only for vioce dialing, and when sending an mms.
It has Java, but it is rather limited as it is only version 1.0, so the number of games that are compatible are limited, and also the java size limit is 512K, so you can only store about 5-10 games on the phone at the one time.
The phone has all the other little gadgets like picture caller ID, voice dialing, sms, mms, video mms, a great email client, phone book (no addresses), individual caller ringtones, infrared & bluetooth. It has a html browser but it is not perticularly useful, so you might want to download a java html browser like reqwireless webviewer and use that instead. You can also turn off the images to save data costs.
The speaker on this phone is one of the most powerful. Just looking at it you know to expect a powerful output. Great for playing music through the mp3 player function when you don't want to use your supplied stereo headphones. Mp3 songs can also be used as ringtones with a certain version of the software, usually when the firmware's upgraded. But the polyphonic and midi tunes are still very good and take up less space. These can be used for alarms also.
The A835 has a very large memory of 64MB, which is one of the largest base memory of any phone, however this is not expandable with a memory card slot.
The handsets 3G capabilities allow it to download video clips from over the internet or 3G mobile networks at blistering speeds. Even compared to other 3G UMTS handsets, this is perticularly fast at downloading over the net.
The PC software is fairly good for transfering data via a USB cable, IR, or bluetooth.
The charging of the phone is a bit frustrating, as often the charger has to be fiddled with in order to get it to work, and the battery life sometimes dosn't make it through the day with heavy use.
Overall this is a very good handset with loads of features and is at a very good price. A few little let downs, and the size lose this phone some points, but still a formidable mobile against it's peers of similar price and features.
