Right then - here it is!

It's very own topic, needless to say, no dirty fighting!

Pease don't post plain antagonistic comments - be constructive, I know this is a passionate subject!

Which is the superior set-up?

Oh no. Not this one again.

I have never owned a Mac but would jump at the chance to buy one. In fact, I've only used one once, but I loved it. Every little bit of it.

PCs are great too because of their compatibility with most software and games blah blah blah etc.

So, I'm pro PC and pro Mac - but Steve Jobs gets my respect over Gates any day... holy crap, those 30" cinema displays... *drool*...

I'm not gonna start anything (as a Mac user), and I most certainly don't care about "converting everyone to mac" as is the view of most pc users. However I will defend Apple and disparrage M$ as much as possible, in reply to humourous posts by such people as teddman and sk8kid, which no doubt will flood in.

@ellie
While PC might have much greater compatability, Mac is compatible with everything that anyone would ever need,

As for games, there is a sufficient amount of decent games for Mac, but of course there's a huge number more for PC.

Anyone who's interested in the whole OS X v's Windows thing should check out Mac OS X Tiger (OS X.4), released Q1 2005

I've always used PC's and Windows, but I've always fancied having a MAC.

I think that most people are so used to using windows that they are reluctant to change. Next time I get a laptop I might get a MAC, they are pretty sexy machines!

I like Mac too, although I never owned one... Ooooh, yes I did, I had this old Macintosh thing... Yeah, it wasn't comparable with what Macs represent these days, but hey, I had one... Very Happy
I think Macs are very ok! But as for compatibility (is that a word?) I prefer Windows...
I'm also in to a lot of audio software, and I think a Mac would provide me stronger stability and power... I don't know why, but it just seems like a more solid and powerfull computer/os.

I'd rather have that paper thin Vaio than a powerbook or iBook any day...

You all know my view on macs - style over substance, for people with more money than (IT) sense.
The benchmarks can be made to make any computer look good, so don't bother posting those - pound for pound, PC gives you more power.
I regularly go on the Macs at Uni as they're always free, even the Dual G5s just seem somehow slow...and the OS just isn't intuitive to someone coming from a Windows environment...

I wouldn't say no if someone gave me a mac, but when I'm spending my hard earned cash, I know where I'm gonna get the better value...
Oh, and FYI Apple - A GeForce FX 5200 is NOT a high end graphics card. In fact it shouldn't even be called a Graphics Card. Or have they stopped shipping the G5s with these now?

Personally, running a variety of OSes on IA32 compatible processors, I think the argument of PC vs Mac is rather pointless. Comparing Windows vs OS X is more valid perhaps?

PCs do have the advantage of a huge range of both software and hardware. This range is a little more limited for Mac machines, simply because no-one's bothered to write drivers for the hardware.

Then again, OS X is BSD with a pretty GUI on it. As such, there's plenty of existing software from *BSD that's fairly easy to move across to OS X. On the other hand, you can run *BSD on a PC pretty easily. (Or on SPARC, MIPS or whatever.)

So, the end result is, what suits the way you work best?

I've never had the opportunity to try a Mac.

I'd probably stick to what i know and buy a PC though if i had to choose.

I've used both mac and pc since System6 and DOS2.11- After that many years use I've come to the conclusion that if you want a computer for games then get a pc, if you want a computer to do real work and (with osx) proper geeky stuff then get a mac.
What have I got?... well, both -for the above reason

"real work"? "proper geeky stuff"? Like what for example?

Very Happy , I found and read a list of all the games that had been ported to MAC once, it was bloody huge.

I've never used a MAC myself personally, but besides my internet browser and trillian, I'd say that itunes is my favorite peice of software on this computer, so I'd say I'm like ellie, I'd love a MAC (and I intend to purchase one when I can afford it), but I also like windows and its compatablity with oodles of 3rd party software (even though as robatashen said, there is probably everything I'd need on a MAC, plus extras)

On another note, dont let this turn into a "You cant right click on a MAC" topic, we all now very well that OS X supports 2button USB mice....Even check there website, there is some MS mice on there.

I dunno what he means by that, maybe something to do with the ability to get straight to the core of the OS (with Terminal)? And real work can be done on PC too.. so I dunno what that's about...

@MFM
Not trying to start anything here, but you can, actually "right click" on a Mac... Either buy a two button mouse or control+click Wink

And yeah, there's loads of great games for the Mac Very Happy

I've been having strange moments recently when I'll want to do something, or want my Windows computer to do it a certain way, and I can't... these are the kinds of things I either know or expect OS X can do. Smile
